Hurt Guitar cover

Hurt – Cover by RJR Daydreamer

I recorded the song ” Hurt ” in January 2022, to some the song may seem depressing or dark, but I just find it beautifully simple and rich with emotion. The ability to empathise with others is what makes us human. The desire to feel others pain and understand elevates us to a higher level.

The recording is an instrumental backing track with me playing the melody, layered using my Fender FA-125CE and Fender Newporter Player Both guitars are electro acoustic which allows the sound to feed directly into my computer and be edited with Bandlab. The video is a compilation of photographs I created from a free-to-use image website Unsplash

The Song

Released by American rock band Nine Inch Nails in 1995 and nominated for a Grammy Award (best rock song) in 1996. Trent Reznor the bands lead, wrote the original with the pain of a young man who had time ahead, but the feeling of little to live for. Seven years later, Johnny Cash recorded a cover version, this time it was an old man with little time and a lifetime of memories to look back on.

Reznor was originally worried when asked if Cash could use the song, but after seeing the music video he wrote…

“I pop the video in, and wow… Tears welling, silence, goose-bumps… Wow. I felt like I just lost my girlfriend, because that song isn’t mine anymore… It really made me think about how powerful music is as a medium and art form. I wrote some words and music in my bedroom as a way of staying sane, about a bleak and desperate place I was in, totally isolated and alone. Somehow that winds up reinterpreted by a music legend from a radically different era/genre and still retains sincerity and meaning – different, but every bit as pure”

Alternative Press issue 194

The official video depicts Cash in the run down family museum filmed aged 71, he died just 7 months later. His wife who is also in the video, died the same year. It is replete with imagery that points to a life full of material things, that now seem fruitless.

I plan to record this again in a couple of years, in the hope that it will be much improved playing! But in the meantime, it is still a go to song when I pick up a guitar.

My last Guitar recording / video can be found in a previous post “Into the west”
