The Book of Mormon

My tag line is “blogging about life the universe and everything” as a consequence posts are an eclectic mix of things that I enjoy, ponder or in some cases are important to me. Todays post falls into the last catagory.

For those who do not know, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which I am one, believe the Bible is the word of God, in as far as it is translated correctly. The geographical area covered by the bible is pretty small in relation to the world and as such we believe that God has had dealings with people in other areas. Those dealings when recorded would be of value to any Christian? One such record is The Book of Mormon.

“The Book of Mormon is a volume of holy scripture comparable to the Bible. It is a record of God’s dealings with ancient inhabitants of the Americas and contains the fulness of the everlasting gospel. The book was written by many ancient prophets by the spirit of prophecy and revelation. Their words, written on gold plates, were quoted and abridged by a prophet-historian named Mormon. The record gives an account of two great civilizations. One came from Jerusalem in 600 B.C. and afterward separated into two nations, known as the Nephites and the Lamanites. The other came much earlier when the Lord confounded the tongues at the Tower of Babel. This group is known as the Jaredites. After thousands of years, all were destroyed except the Lamanites, and they are among the ancestors of the American Indians.”

At this point some of my fellow Christians may be thinking of one of the several quotes found in the Bible, that says not to add to it. Bear in mind that the Bible is a canon of books compiled together after the authors wrote each section. Many things have been added to it already! Also the Book of Mormon does not add to the Bible, it stands along side as a separate testament to complement it.

The Book of Mormon teaches of Jesus Christ and reaffirms His gospel of faith, repentance, baptism and the gift of The Holy Ghost. It also confirms in a unique way, His sacrifice and resurrection, which is particularly relevant as we approach Easter.

In fact for many the highlight of the Book of Mormon record is found around the middle sections. Following the crucifiction Christians believe that Jesus on several occasions in the next forty days ministered to his disciples as a ressurected being. Latter-day Saints believe following this he visited the people of the Americas spoken off in the introduction above.

The Father testifies of His Beloved Son—Christ appears and proclaims His Atonement—The people feel the wound marks in His hands and feet and side—They cry Hosanna—He sets forth the mode and manner of baptism

A few years ago, a handful of local members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, were invited to be involved in professionally filmed videos about their faith. Two minute or less snippets of faith. My youngest daughter Ruth was one of those who was asked.

Members of the church invite all to find out why we think the Book of Mormon is special, we never knowingly try to be pushy, rather just believe that no one can make an informed decision, unless they are informed !
