For around 18 years I undertook contracted maintenance, refurbishments and inspections of church buildings around the North West of England. Occasionally also some buildings in central Scotland.
The work involved a lot of travelling and the majority of the day was spent either alone driving in my car or working in empty church buildings.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, of which I am a member and for whom I was working, is famous for sending out pairs of missionaries to teach the gospel. I figured I could do a bit of passive missionary work. So I set up a dedicated instagram account and painted some plastic figures to look like missionaries
I started taking these two mini-missionaries with me, that later doubled to four. Eventually a car was added to the collection.
A few minutes of break time was spent snapping a picture of my mini-missionaries. Their instagram account began to gain followers. With people commenting on where they thought the building was. My name wasn’t associated to the account so we even had followers that I knew, but didn’t realise it was me.
As time passed (and I ran out of buildings) the little folk progressed to having uplifting messages in their pictures, or church related props with quiz questions. Like name the languages on the book covers…
All good things come to an end and so did the little folks mission. I thought it would be fun to dig out some of the pictures though to give them another brief audience.
